Pumpkin - SOLD

This pumpkin originally was gray. I kept it for a year. Eventually, it started to change color on its way to going bad. I chose it originally, not only for its color, but because a lot of the stem was still attached. After it started turning, I wanted to paint it again but from a different angle. So, looking down from the top, the play of shadows from the stem and the changing color - a bit of the gray still coming through -was what was exciting to me.

Leaf Meditation - SOLD

I love pottery. The clay and the colors come from the earth and is usually worked by someone's hands. This bowl holds a branch of oak leaves - if I visualize the hands molding the bowl, the hands are holding the leaves. Just seems a meditation to me.

Escapee

I couldn't get these tomatoes to look just right so I took one off the stem to better arrange them. Then, it looked like that one was escaping. I really like the bright colors and the looseness of this painting.

Rock Art - SOLD

My student saw a painting with hanging vegetables and wanted to do something similar, so I hung this rock. The fun thing about painting something that is hanging is the shadow play you get on the background.

Fall Apple - SOLD

Even though I've titled this one "Fall Apple", it really is a spring painting. In Texas the "live oak" trees shed their leaves when the new ones start coming out, so the ground is covered with these brown leaves. I was taken with this apple because of it's colors - it just looked like fall.

Blue Plum

Back to the small exercises. I bought this shiny brass bowl - it was more difficult than I anticipated. I love the dark plum, however, and plan to use more of them in a larger still life.

Final Demo - "Red Apple and Copper"

Here is the final painting I did for the video. I have to admit I went back in and worked on the grapes some, my sister thought they were black olives!

Dark Poppy - SOLD

Years ago a friend and I were making shadow boxes with various things in them. We would scour antique stores to find things and I bought several old books - just love the look of them. This one is a favorite.

Wild Garlic

I participated in a workshop one year when the wild flowers were plentiful and these wild garlic plants caught my attention. I haven't seen them again there since. Glad I took the opportunity to paint them!

Pam's Bottles - SOLD

Recently I went to Corpus Christi to visit with a friend who has this collection of bottles in her bathroom next to the mirror. You have to look closely, but the reflections start with the black line and go to the right. The framed picture was actually on the wall to the left of the bottles. This was a fun painting!

Dappled Light - SOLD

This is something I did strictly for fun. It was a painting I'd done from a photograph in Utopia, Texas. The painting was kinda ho-hum, so I decided to have some fun with it. I really like how this turned out. What do you think?

Looking Out

I had these 3 oranges that I used in a larger painting so thought I'd better do one more before I eat them. I think this turned out pretty well. I hope you like it.

Morning Light - SOLD

I really like this painting. It was taken from a photo another artist loaned me. She couldn't remember if it was taken in Mexico or New Mexico. I think it could be most anywhere.

Blue Canoe

This is a plein-aire painting. A group of us went to one of the creeks in Wimberley and this is what I painted. My sister asked me one time why boats were so popular with artists. I guess the question kinda threw me for a loop because I thought the answer was clear: many of them are hand-made, they are generally graceful and colorful, there's something romantic and relaxing about them, and depending on the setting, they envoke a variety of feelings to the viewer and they all seem to have a story to tell.

Adobe Wall

This is painted from another photo I took in New Mexico. I think it's a good combination of color and textures. New Mexico is such a magical place - the light and colors are wonderful.

Atop the Hill - SOLD

This past weekend, I was in the Wimberley Valley Art League November Show. It was quite successful for me as I sold a large (24" x 30") painting and 5 small ones, including this post. I had a lot of favorable comments and enjoyed it thoroughly. I am starting to paint more often and will be posting more paintings.
This painting was done on a ranch here in Driftwood, Texas. I hope to do more plein aire paintings, especially around Driftwood. It's a beautiful area but changing rapidly.

Red Pear - SOLD

I went to Mexico to attend the workshop with Qiang Huang with my friend from Wimberley, Liz Maness. We stayed with Isabel (a former student of Liz') in her beautiful home there. Had a wonderful time and the workshop was great. Qiang is a very good teacher and he and his wife, Song, are very special people. This pear was one of several setups.

Three Green Apples

It's been a long time since I have posted anything. Hopefully, I will be posting more often. Finally retired and am getting settled and in a "routine" that will allow me to paint most days. This one I did at a friend's house in Wimberley.

Year's End - SOLD

I thought of different titles, but decided on this one. Hope it doesn't offend anyone. Actually, I'm not very good with titles but I'm trying. My norm would have been "wine bottles with corks". Naming a painting is supposed to be very important according to the painting gurus; if that's the case, I'm in trouble. When I see a painting I like, the first thing I do is scrutinize it up close, silently wish I could paint like that, and then read the title. Sometimes I don't even read the title unless it's an abstract and I'm hoping for some enlightenment on what it is to the artist. What do you think?
